ARTIST LODGING

A home
for visiting artists.
An existing building in AlJadidah was upgraded into lodging and studios for the AlUla Artist Residency: a lounge and open kitchen under a glass rooflight, quiet bedrooms, two working studios and a roof terrace that looks over the oasis to the sandstone cliffs. Terrazzo, earth plaster, carved breeze block and reclaimed timber keep it calm and local, so the artists’ own work can be the colour in the house.
All studies, design development, technical drawings and the BOQ (bills of quantities) for this project were prepared by Mohamed Bider for AMSY Group — the upgrade of the residence into artists’ lodging and studios, its interiors, furniture, lighting and roof terrace.

Designed and built, ready for the 2023 residency season.
Artists’ studios with pine work tables and task lighting.
Glass rooflight bringing daylight into the lounge and kitchen.
Materials in one palette, from terrazzo to cognac leather.
Between the oasis
and the cliffs.
The residence stands in AlJadidah, AlUla’s arts district, where the Arts AlUla residency opened its permanent accommodation so that artists live among the community. From the roof the view runs across the palm groves to the sandstone cliffs. The pin marks the district — the exact plot is to be confirmed.

Studies.
The house read as layers, a zoning plan, a section and a light plan. Select a study.
Earth, timber
and weave.
Eight materials carry the whole house: a terrazzo floor, earth plaster walls, a carved white breeze-block screen, reclaimed railway timber, dark timber floors in the bedrooms, jute, linen and cognac leather.
The real
pieces.
Every piece on site, chosen or made for the house: butterfly chairs in leather, a carved antique chest, bouclé armchairs around a tree-trunk table, tree-trunk pendants, timber wedge sconces, woven benches and stone basins on reclaimed railway sleepers.
The lounge
under the light.
The heart of the house, as completed in May 2023: a double-height lounge and open kitchen under a glass rooflight, whose timber beams draw a moving grid of sun across the terrazzo through the day.
Quiet
rooms.
Bedrooms with low white platform beds, jute hangings, timber-framed linen wardrobes and dark timber floors; bathrooms with stone basins on reclaimed railway-timber vanities and backlit round mirrors.
Room
to work.
Two studios for the artists: pine work tables on black steel legs, task lamps and adjustable chairs, and a long timber counter along the window under linen curtains.
The roof
terrace.
A terrazzo terrace around the glass rooflight, enclosed by a white breeze-block parapet: loungers, rattan sets under parasols and a stone-walled corner for evening fires, with the oasis and the cliffs all around.
Scope.
What the upgrade covers.
A glass rooflight with timber beams, terrazzo floors, the open kitchen and the stair screen.
Platform beds, linen wardrobes, timber floors, stone basins on reclaimed sleepers.
Two working studios with pine tables, task lighting and a window counter.
Terrazzo, breeze-block parapet, loungers, rattan sets, parasols and a fire corner.
