ABHA HERITAGE
ROUNDABOUTS
إعادة تأهيل الدوارات بأبها الحضرية – جداريات عسيرية
The city
tells its story.
A programme to rehabilitate the urban roundabouts of Abha and dress its retaining walls with Asiri murals. Each junction becomes a landmark drawn from the heritage of the south — Al-Qatt Al-Asiri painting, woven textiles, stone villages, the coffee pot of welcome and the Asiri man himself — so that driving through the city becomes a journey through its culture.
All the studies, the eleven roundabout and mural concepts, the design development, technical drawings and the BOQ (bills of quantities) for this project were prepared by Mohamed Bider for AMSY Group.

Concepts for roundabouts, medians and walls.
Mural families — living heritage walls and the mountain mural.
The painted art of Asiri homes as the shared language of every piece.
Prepared for Aseer Amanah as a tender proposal.
Across
Abha.
The roundabouts sit on the main urban junctions of Abha, the capital of Asir, at about 2,200 metres in the Sarawat mountains — a green, misty city with a strong painted and woven heritage.

Eleven
concepts.
Each concept takes one element of Asiri heritage and turns it into a landmark for a junction or a wall.
A green steel blade rising from a sail-shaped shell wrapped in Al-Qatt patterns, on a planted island ringed by water.
A ribbon of woven Asiri textile looping over the island — Al-Qatt colours in steel.
A fragment of an Asiri village wall with hanging lanterns, set on the median.
Timber lattice towers lit from within, like lanterns along the road.
A gateway of bold Al-Qatt colour planes beside a stone tower.
A rearing horse drawn in weaving lines, on a landscaped mountain island.
The coffee pot of welcome traced in coloured steel frames.
A figure of the Asiri man in traditional dress on a stepped stone base.
Perforated steel screens of drawn heritage motifs that glow at night.
Living walls of timber and planting, and a mountain mural in Al-Qatt colours, dressing a retaining wall.
A hilltop of painted totems and a timber watch tower in the mist.
Studies.
The programme as one heritage route, one monument taken apart, and one figure in elevation and section. Select a study.
Materials
& colours.
Asiri rubble stone and white quartz ledges from the villages, juniper timber, corten and Asiri-green steel, woven palm fibre, bronze — and the red, ochre, green and blue of Al-Qatt Al-Asiri painting.
The landmarks,
visualised.
Golden hour on the Sail of the Sarawat, the Asiri Guardian at dusk, and the woven towers lit along the road.
Asiri murals.
The retaining walls along the roads become heritage walls: timber screens with hanging planting, and a mountain mural painted in Al-Qatt colours.
