AL-QASAB
ROUNDABOUT
دوار القصب · مجسم العشة الجيزانية
The gathered
bundle.
Before the usha becomes a shelter, it is a bundle of reeds in a craftsman’s hands — gathered, raised and tied with a woven band. The monument holds that moment at civic scale: a sheaf of reeds splayed open at the crown, cinched by the colourful Jizani band, its striped textile trailing to the ground. It marks the eastern gateway into Jizan, where King Fahd Road meets the open Tihama plain.
The concept, the site analysis, the studies, the materials palette, the visualisations and the preliminary BOQ (bills of quantities) for this landmark were prepared by Mohamed Bider for AMSY Group.

The sheaf, about 15 m on a Ø 9 m plinth — refined in the October 2026 BOQ from the 25 m first concept.
Island diameter — read from more than a kilometre away on the flat Tihama plain.
Central feature zone of basalt setts and gravel in radial bands, like the warp of a weave.
Warm in-ground uplights graze the reeds; a linear light traces the woven band.
The gateway
to Jizan.
The roundabout sits on King Fahd Road (Route 1564) at the eastern approach to Jizan. A civic complex anchors the north-west quadrant; the rest is open land, so the island is seen from every approach. The brief: a silhouette that reads at driving speed by day and a beacon at night, in materials that stand up to sun, humidity, salt air and dust.

Materials
& colours.
The usha remembered in durable materials: golden powder-coated steel reeds that weather to a patina, braided doum-palm thatch for the texture panels at the plinth, the Jizani woven band in perforated aluminium and pigmented GRC, earthen lime plaster for the plinth and seat walls, basalt setts and desert gravel for the ground — with acacias, doum palms and native grasses.
Mood — memory of the Tihama
The gateway
by day.
From above, the sheaf rises from its woven ground of basalt and gravel; at street level it towers over the approach, the Jizani band and banner carrying the colour of the region.
A beacon
at night.
In-ground uplights graze the reed texture, the crown silhouettes against the sky and traffic draws rings of light around the island.
Details.
The hand of the craft at monumental scale: thousands of reeds held by the Jizani band, the crown splayed open against the sun and the stars.
